Sunday in Guatemala
Today was our first day out in Guatemala City, and it was an incredible experience. We started with a delicious breakfast provided by Engadi—eggs, bacon, toast, yogurt, and fresh fruit.
After breakfast, we made our way to the local church where Nathan, the lead missionary and founder of Engadi, attends. We were surprised by how similar it was to Foothills—there were lights, the same style of music (sung in Spanish, of course), free coffee, and great teaching. It was the perfect way to start our week.
Following the church service, we headed to the Engadi ministry location. Engadi specifically focuses on a neighborhood called Paradise (though it’s pronounced differently than we Americans might expect). We learned that Guatemala is roughly the same size as Tennessee, and Guatemala City is divided into 25 zones. Paradise is just one neighborhood within one of those zones, yet it has a population of approximately 30,000 people! That number alone gives you an idea of how densely packed this community is.
When we arrived at the Engadi ministry site, David shared the mission of Engadi and how we would be contributing to it. There’s so much to say about what we learned, but honestly, my brain is too tired to process it all right now—so I’ll save that for another post!
After our orientation, we had lunch and then set out to host a block party. It was amazing to see everyone connecting with someone. I’ve included a few pictures to capture the moments. We’re excited and hopeful to see many of these kids again at VBS tomorrow!
